Residents have been invited to have their say on a proposed new town in Devon, which would create around 8,000 new homes

Today, the East Devon District Council (EDDC) is inviting residents to share their views on a proposed new town located just south of Exeter airport.

Most residents opposed the proposed new town in Devon

Last year, the EDDC ran a similar discussion with residents to determine the most preferred location for a second new town, after the Cranbrook development, which was first occupied in 2012 and continues to grow.

In that discussion, several proposed locations were discussed, however, around 65% of the respondents were simply opposed to the proposed new town altogether.

At the time, councillor Olly Davey said that while there was a “lack of enthusiasm” amongst residents, “it would be irresponsible of the committee not to explore this option to meet government housing targets.”

Eventually, the location south of Exeter airport was determined as the preferred location for the proposed new town in Devon.

The new town would help meet housing targets

The proposed new town will have around 8,000 homes, as the EDCC says it wishes to create “a self-sufficient and dynamic community with a distinctive character.”

Todd Olive, the council’s portfolio holder for strategic planning, said: “This new community is a key part of our strategy for delivering genuinely sustainable new homes.

“Large-scale development of this kind enables us to embed new jobs, local services, and green spaces – ensuring that we create a vibrant, sustainable new town that residents can be proud to call home.

“This drop-in event is an important opportunity for you to share your thoughts on the evolving masterplan, and to help shape what this new community will look like for decades to come.”

The establishment of the New Towns Taskforce may help communities like this one become a reality.

Residents can drop in at the Westpoint centre between 11:30-19:30 today to share their views.
