‘I regretted buying my first home the moment I got the keys – this is why’

A new homeowner was astounded after turning the key in the door to find a completely different house to the one she fell in love with.

A new home-owner was stunned to find her new purchase in a total mess when she got the keys – despite it being "looking and smelling amazing" before. The TikTok user @victoria.louise94 explained that she saved up a deposit and went to view the property which she was cleaning. She said: "And let me tell you it did not look like this when I got the keys. Yes I did view the house before I bought it. I viewed a few every time I went round. The windows were open and incense was burning. It smelled nice and fresh and the house itself looked amazing. Got a survey done to check for any damage to the house or anything that may affect the building."

She later said she had gone ahead with the sale and was imagining her dream home. But when she got the keys for the property she uncovered something totally different. She said: "I opened the door and all I could smell was cat wee. The carpets were drenched in cat wee I never noticed when I went to view the house because the windows were open and there was incense burning."

Victoria said she had gone to see the house a total of three times and hadn’t noticed and also said smelt of damp which was spotted in the survey report. She added: "When I went upstairs there was a massive hole in the roof in a cupboard of the bedroom .I never saw this because there was a girl asleep in the bedroom."

Other problems were later found in the house leading her to say she had "buyer’s remorse". Her anger continued and she said: "I paid for a home survey report and assumed they would find things like this. She said she "immediately regretted" buying the house as soon as she got the keys. Many people were angry at what she had gone through and she received a flood of comments on TikTok. Many people questioned if surveyors actually checked the property beforehand.

One person said: "I swear the surveyors must just open the front door and peak in. They never find any major problems" And another commenter added: "Omg we were the same. I cried when I walked in to our house. Kids had drawn all over walls. They knocked plaster off the walls when emptying it. Leaks everywhere."

She was not the only person to experience buyer’s remorse. One person added: "We’ve had the same issue roof was is just totally rotten, inside the kitchen cupboards are all mouldy and the kitchen is extended onto the back of the house and there’s holes behind the cupboards
