Net zero buildings in Copenhagen, of the kind that the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard will bring more of to the UK

The first agreed-upon methodology for net-zero buildings, the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, has launched today

Today sees the launch of the UK’s first cross-industry standard for net-zero aligned buildings, the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.

This will provide the construction industry with the ability and framework to prove their buildings are net-zero.

The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is free to access

The technical standard allows the construction industry to robustly prove that built assets align with the UK’s carbon and energy budgets.

This is the first time that there has been a universally agreed upon standard for net zero in the UK. This is intended to avoid false claims of net zero.

The policy is also for use by policymakers who need to know what defines net zero in the UK for legislation purposes.

The pilot version of the Standard includes what limits and targets need to be met, the technical evidence required to prove it, and how to report it.

The built environment is encouraged to engage with the Standard pilot, and prepare for the process of verifying net zero carbon buildings.

Sustainable buildings will be easier to achieve

Katie Clemence-Jackson, chair of the Standard’s Technical Steering Group, said: “The Standard has been created not just using industry data on what is achievable, but also cross-referencing this with ‘top down’ modelling of what is needed to decarbonise our industry in line with 1.5°C aligned carbon and energy budgets. It covers all the major building sectors, as well as both new and existing buildings.

“With access to the Standard, the built environment industry is equipped to target, design and operate buildings to be net zero carbon aligned, driving the positive change that we need to meet our climate goals.

“I would like to thank all our volunteers from across the built environment who have contributed their time, experience and knowledge to allow us to develop a robust Standard. This has been an immensely collaborative process, and we couldn’t have achieved it without your support.”
